There were formidable candidates for leader of China in the early 2000s. Two of the most prominent were Chen Liangyu and Bo Xilai. Both established stellar track records as administers of important provincial and municipal governments. Xi Jinping, on the other hand, spent 17 years in Fujian with little to show in the way of accomplishments.

Chen Liangyu, Mayor of Shanghai (2001-03) and CCP Secretary of Shanghai (2002-06), was one of the power players in the Shanghai Faction who posed a formidable obstacle to the Ye-Xi Clique in their quest to put Xi Jinping into power.
